F-Day 2023

It's hard to get the WHOLE crew together as the families grow. Still, twice a year, there is a gathering of the Westra clan, calling all those who can make it. Father's Day and Christmas Eve. The Father's Day gatherings have consistently provided a photo opportunity, with 16 posed pictures on the back porch of Scott and Amy's house on Old English road (see the 2022 post). This year ... it was at the Haven Moor House. A familiar backyard, because it was the Westra (Lamar/Margie) backyard for years before (although inside the house! Many changes and updates!) As per picture usual, one regular, one silly. It was quite a crew this year!

Blackhams didn't bring the 9-Square this year, but there were other games: Kan-Jam, ladder golf and corn hole. Marinated chicken, Brazilian Cheese Rolls and amazing gluten free desserts ala Christine were among the food offerings.

Cal and Kate had called Scott to ask if they could bring their new doggy, Vera. It wasn't planned, but Kate and Keaton were most matchy! Five boy picture pose around the patriarch (Grandma) and as Gray was mia, a picture with one of the other bald guys around for the Blackham Father's Day photo (thanks Scott for filling in!)

... there were several selfies thanks to "Be Real" going off during the party.

... and the girl cousins had a fun time putting together a little dance!

Great-Grand Baby Blessing & Gluten Free Muffins

Wendy is great about keeping records of events on their family blog - you can read her post HERE. It was Sunday, January 22 when the 6th Westra great-grandchild was blessed. Eli Dean Jensen. As Jase and Ellen live in Herriman, the Jensen's traveled from St. George and stayed with Shane and Alicia in Highland before the blessing. It was a snowy day for travel!

After the blessing at the church, there was a luncheon at Jase and Ellen's basement apartment after. Rick's mom brought some muffins (made gluten-free)  to Eli's baby blessing. As they were a hit, the recipe was shared via email afterward:

Prize Winning Muffins from Michigan State Fair
3 eggs
1 cup oil
2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups shredded zucchini
1 8¼ can drained crushed pineapple
3 cups flour (brown rice flour when making them gluten-free)
2 tsp soda
1 scant tsp salt
½ tsp baking power
¾ tsp nutmeg
1½ tsp cinnamon
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Beat eggs. Add oil, sugar, and vanilla. Continue beating until mixture is thick and foamy. Stir in pineapple and zucchini. Combine sifted flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baking powder and stir into the mixture. Gently add nuts and raisins. Pour into lined cupcake tins. Bake at 35 degrees for 15-20 minutes. If making into a loaf, bake for about one hour.

LaMar and Margie

This year has been a year of change in the Westra Clan, as 3 family members have moved! Shane & Alicia told us many years ago that they would take care of us in our old age – and a couple years ago, we told them we were "getting there."  They immediately found and purchased a lot and Shane (whose undergraduate degree was in architecture) designed a beautiful new modern home with a lovely apartment for us on the main floor. We each have our own space but are connected by just a door. They even built me a new, larger therapy pool, so I could continue my daily water aerobics exercise! We appreciate their willingness to take over hosting many of the big family parties. It was a huge undertaking cleaning out our home of 28 years, with all the stuff that accumulated over time! Our kids were super helpful! We left our Church ward of 51 years but are only a half hour away and some friends have already made the trip to come visit us! We love our new home and are closer to 3 of our kids, who live in Northern Utah County. Our new address is: 5819 W. Yorkshire Court, Highland, Utah, 84003. Stop by and visit!

LaMar is still serving a Family History mission from home for worldwide support, answering phone calls from patrons with questions about FamilySearch. I hope to work more on my website: margiesmessages.com. We have 32 grandchildren: 17 boys and 15 girls--ages 6 to 30 years old. We were blessed with 3 more great-grandchildren this year – Everett, and a preemie baby boy, Eli, 4 lbs. 3 oz., who is doing great, And a baby girl Charlotte. We have 6 great-grandchildren now with two boys expected in the Summer!

We wish health and happiness to all our family and friends!

Love, Margie and LaMar

Christmas Eve 2022

(this will be backdated to December 24, 2022)
Christmas Eve, with soup and the slideshow and the candy bar game, is an annual tradition for the Westra family. This year, everyone traveled to Alpine to gather in Shane and Alicia's lovely new home. Built for entertaining, it was a great place to get together for food, family and fun.

There were several soups ...Jen's Chicken Noodle was not gluten-free, but all the others were! Kim's Ham and Bean soup, Danielle's Sweet Potato Sausage,  Janika's Cheesy Potato and Broccoli, Alicia's Creamy Chicken and Rice. There were gluten-free Brazilian Cheese Rolls, and gluten-full breadsticks, dinner rolls and orange rolls. The breadsticks and cheese rolls were baked on the premises (best fresh out of the oven) and Grandma's Kitchen (just a hallway away) came in handy, even with the double ovens in Shane and Alicia's kitchen. There were chips and dips and cheese roll, and SO many desserts!

There were several tables for eating. Plenty of space. Lots of food! Got some pictures in Santa hats and other festive accoutrements. Then it was time to review the past year ... the calendars were passed out, and the slideshow was up on the screen. This year's soundtrack was "Gonna Be Good" by Bloom and the Bliss, "Moments to Memories" by Adeline Hill, "Stars in the Sky" by Kid Cudi (Sonic Soundtrack) and "These Are The Best Days" by PinkZebra. Beyond the birthdays, holidays, school stuff, this was a big HOUSE year, with major moves and other renovations and remodels. See the calendar pages and a slideshow HERE

Then it was time for THE CANDY BAR GAME ...
The crew moved to the basement for a little more open an area.
Just to note, lots of things in the center were NOT candy bars.

... here's a little video of the action.

Until next year!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!

2022 Slideshow & Calendar Pages

Every year, there is a call for photos ... these pictures are organized and added to the annual Westra calendar and slideshow. Both items are presented at the Christmas Eve party, and they are both showcased here. In previous years, the production of the calendar has changed hands a few times. Alicia has been creating it for a few years now (Grayson handled several years, and Sandy is the one who started it, with a single calendar for the folks and physical pictures adhered to a paper calendar). With the house/move, Jen took over (which makes sense, as the calendar and slideshow often have similar organization into holidays, topics, etc).

Here's the slideshow ...

https://youtu.be/Ib804Ifs8x8

(all the slideshows are also saved in the family Dropbox)

Just over 13 minutes, This year's soundtrack features "Gonna Be Good" by Bloom and the Bliss, "Moments to Memories" by Adeline Hill, "Stars in the Sky" by Kid Cudi (Sonic Sountrack) and "These Are The Best Days" by PinkZebra. Beyond the birthdays, holidays, school stuff, this was a big HOUSE year, with major moves and other renovations and remodels.

While these calendar pages are for the 2023 calendar, they reflect 2022.

For January - photos featuring SNOW and COLD were the primary focus. Also events that happened (family gatherings, Jen's bonk) and January is the main basketball season ...

For February ... anything love, pink or Valentines made the cut. While Callahan isn't the only February birthday, his was the only one with a picture of the event.

March ... while some of these did actually happen in March, most were just random additions for the month. There's an attempt to get things chronological, but what's the point (point pictures)?

April means Easter! Add some dress-up, spring blossoms and other activities to fill out the month.

May means Mother's Day ... and Graduations (some were early June, but ...). Derek is one of the May birthdays, and April Showers bring May Flowers. Wordle just filled in.

June ... all pictures from the annual Father's Day.
Last one on Old English Road.

July ... some seasonal stuff with the parade floats and fireworks. New baby, Anniversary ... photo fill ins and house progress.

August means back to school ... lots of school photos.
Photo fill in ... try to make sure every family is represented on every page.

September ... lovely leaves and other fall photos. A couple new additions to the work force. Family photo fill in for the rest, hopefully somewhat in season.

October ... Happy Halloween. Lots of fun dress up and pumpkin patch pictures.

Blessings, Baptisms, Birthdays, Engagement and new early addition
... and moving day!

December ... the calendar and slideshow were already created, so most of these are 2021 pictures ... (although there are two that are 2022). This was the last Christmas Eve in the Havenmoor House. Most of the pictures from the party made it into the ChristmasEve2021 post, but check it out for additional details about that day.

The slideshow and calendar pages ... it's a quick look back at the year!
Thanks for the memories!

AI Images and other Face Funnies

Derek spent a little time on MyHeritage.com (a site similar to FamilySearch.org and Ancestory.com) and traced his lineage back and found some ancestors that have a striking resemblance to him! It was amazing to find so many well preserved pictures, and with such a likeness in so many family lines! From a Viking forefather, to a Persian prince, a gladiator, a cowboy... Okay, just kidding, these are ALL Derek, worked over in the artificial intelligence time machine that My Heritage offers on their site. To get this time-treatment, you are asked to upload 10-25 pictures of yourself (3 full body shots, 5 upper body, 10 closeups and 2 profile pictures). The AI then takes all the data, mashes and matches to create these past portrayals.

AI Art is all the rage right now ... although it's not without some controversy. In an article by the MorningBrew news site, it mentions that artists are upset about copyright concerns and devaluation of real-life skills. There are also privacy and ethical issues ... but it is easy to see the appeal of getting such pictures so quickly, easily and inexpensively.

While not quite as realistic ... FamilySearch.Org offers a similar fun photo activity. With it, you can take a simple selfie to add and upload your face to preset picture poses. This was a Westra Family History Challenge back in 2021 with some great results! Many of the grandkids participated.

MyHeritage also offers an "animation" option ... upload a picture and bring it to life. This is especially unique to photos of long lost ancestors who have never been seen "alive" by current generations. There was a blog post featuring this fun option too ... Animating Ancestors

Jen went a little crazy with the #voila app in 2021, which could "Disney-fy" photos, creating cute cartoons (see some of Margie here).  You can check out some other funny faces on a Blackham Bunch Blogpost.  There are  fun filters, face swap apps and in 2021 Derek made this #refaceapp clip of he and Danielle in some starring roles ...

Silly technology!

LaMar's Missionary Journal

This will be backdated to 1957

Dad/Lamar kept a journal during his missionary service. In The History of Joseph LaMar Westra, there is a short recap the mission. Chris decided to re-type the missionary journal so that it could be more easily read and saved for the future. Check out a portion below (Aug/Sept 1957), and then there are blog pages for 1957, 1958 and more will be added as Christopher transforms the printed words into digital records.
