2022 Graduates

With the end of the school year, come graduations! Quite a few graduates, like last year (2021 Graduates) although this year was definitely dominated by the Jensens.

Starting with high school. First up ... Jaiden (featured in the collage above). Wendy did a full write up on her blog. Of Jaiden's Graduation, and all the other end of year activities surrounding it. ConGRADulations to Jaiden!

Cooper was the other high school graduate this year.
ConGRADulations to Cooper.

Both of the high schools featuring a navy cap and gown.
Last year, two were green (the other was gray).

Compare/Contrast the Six Westra Siblings and their high school graduations (colors/years)

Then there were the college grads ...

Jase and Ellen graduated from Dixie University.
Super cute photo shoot with baby Evan!

Scott and Amy celebrated Kellen - UVU graduate!

... and Janika graduated from Utah State with her Masters.

Wendy wrote up all the details about the Jensen graduates on her blog.

Ping Pong People

Ping pong is first mentioned in Dad/Lamar's history. In the Grandview Circle years, he mentions playing with his friend Dick Van Wagenen. After high school, ping pong was mentioned as an Institute activity up at the University of Utah. The Havenmoor House featured a ping pong table in the basement, and many table tennis tournaments pitting grandkids against Grandpa. If you check out Dad's letter (December2021) he mentions playing ping pong a couple times.

In 2012, Kaden made a little video, with the Westra ping pong table playing a major role ...

https://youtu.be/XFSnGsgXN3k

This last week, it was an end of an era as Mom/Margie wrote in an email ...

Derek took photos of our barbecue and posted it on ksl for free, as well as 2 bookcases and the ping pong table, etc.  A grandpa and his son, from Magna, came for the ping pong table and ended up taking the little billiards set too for his grandkids. As Derek helped them load things in their truck, the older man cried and said it was an answer to prayer as his wife has Alzheimer's, but she loves playing/hitting a ping pong ball back and forth.

I asked if there might be a ping  pong table in the new house, and Alicia confirmed that was in the plan.

Chris's crew added a ping pong table to their home in 2021, and it's been a fun addition for them.

The Blackham's added a ping pong table back in 2011, and while use has been on and off over the years, it's been an integral addition. There have been many wild games of "around the world" and "sting pong", and in 2020&2021, Jen and Cooper would play almost every day. Sometimes Joy would join in ...

Derek's family had a ping pong table for a time, under their deck.
Derek did NOT take it easy on his old man ...

D&D sold their table ... but they still have THIS setup!

Wendy had an early ping pong entry in her journal ...
January 11, 1982: My friend, Tammy Tisdale, and I were ping pong partners in doubles for a little school tournament and we got first place!
Jensen's had an old ping pong table that came with the house when they bought it, but it wasn't in the best shape and gave out. They still have managed some ping pong adventures ... Wendy shared their 2018 Father's Day Flee video, which showcases the aforementioned "Sting Pong" (see it here https://youtu.be/10Ar5HQfCis?t=1029).  They had a nice setup in their 2020 Father's Day flee as well (photo below).

Josh suffered a ping pong injury to his eye (from a flailing paddle) in 2019.

... and while not ping pong per se, Josh and Jaiden made a fun "trick shots" video with ping pong balls when they were homebound and bored during the Covid shut-down in 2020 ...

https://youtu.be/dMAERyNLhtc

Keep on playing, ping pong people!

Sterling Scholars

Spring of 2016 ... Jase Jensen was named Sterling Scholar in Mathematics for his high school. He was not the first in the Westra line to achieve Sterling Scholar, nor the last, not even just within the Jensen family ... Wendy has created blog posts showcasing her Sterling Scholars (see links below).

The Westra Sibling Generation produced two Sterling Scholars ... in 1984 and 1994, Chris and Shane respectively.  Christopher nabbed the position to represent Cottonwood High School in Business. He had some trips, to USU and Atlanta, Georgia, dealing with his business exploits.  Shane was Sterling Scholar for Art, also for Cottonwood High (all the Westra siblings attended there). A couple of his pieces are still on display in the halls of the school (see below).

We have an ART label here on the blog, as while Shane was the only Sterling Scholar in this area, others in the family also enjoyed drawing and painting (although Wendy says the artistic gene skipped her).

Jen totally planned on being Sterling Scholar for Drama her graduation year (1989). With many productions and leading roles and a 3.9 GPA, it seemed like a lock. Then Emilie DeAzevado (you may have heard of the DeAzevado name, well known in the LDS music world) moved from California, with even more experience and stellar grades, and the nod went to her. Jen was quite crushed to miss out on this goal ... but the whole Sterling Scholar process IS a lot of work in the preparation of a portfolio, interviewing, etc., and even more competition beyond the school level. So ... she survived (and still made it through college on scholarships to graduate debt free).

I did some searches in newspaper/yearbook archives, I DID find a Shane showcase ...

He's there in the top left corner ... his quote says "This art stuff is great, but what does it have to do with the Iconoclastic controversy?" Asking Shane what his quote meant, he replied "Haha, that iconoclastic controversy quote was an inside joke that only the best of Mr. Bill’s art students would understand!"

Here's clippings from the newspaper featuring Chris and Shane and the other competitors.

Passing the Buck ~ Dollar Tree

In February 2022, Derek's family had a getaway to Moab. Above, you can see a list that little Layla made up of important things to do. On that list ... a trip to Dollar Tree! This was not the first time Layla's love for Dollar Tree made it on to social media. About a year earlier, January of 2021, Derek posted this text conversation between Layla and her Grandpa Taylor ~

On this blog, in addition to family history and more recent family fun, I've tried to include some things beyond family, things affecting the time (the state, the country, the world) as well.  Dollar Tree was one of the first "dollar stores" and has been selling its items for the famous ONE DOLLAR for over 35 years. It made the news (end of 2021, beginning of 2022) when Dollar Tree officially raised it's prices to $1.25.

It is the end of an era.

Just as "penny candy" is a thing of the past,
I wonder if Layla & the other grandkids will remember when things at DT actually cost $1 ...

Now - should there be an explanatory post about Ugly Dolls???
Check out Timeless Toys for the favorites of the Westra kids growing up.

Graduation 2021

Covid canceled almost all the graduation ceremonies in 2020 ... people still graduated, they just didn't get all the pomp and circumstance that usually accompanies this accomplishment. In 2021, things were getting under control, and the graduation ceremonies, while altered from previous years (being held outside, limited attendance) were happening. And there were several graduates in the extended family!

Starting with Spencer (McKenna's hubby). Two years in BYU's MBA program.

That was the "blue" ... there were also two from the "U"

Courtney graduated from the University of Utah with a double major in religion and world history, double minor in Arabic and Mediterranean studies.  At first only two people would be allowed to attend, so she picked her mom (Kim) and her husband. But then they allowed a couple more so Anita (Seth’s Mom) and Integrity were able to go also. It was held outside in the stadium and it was quite a hot day.

Kate also graduated from the U ...
Kate graduated Summa Cum Laude in Psychology and Positive Psychology from the University of Utah. She spent her senior year studying Post-Traumatic Growth while being a TA for her favorite professor and proposed a Sustainable Campus Grant proposal that addressed plastic waste and period poverty on campus. (see Kate Graduates on the Blackham Blog).

Alyssa has been pursuing her education at Western Governer's University and she graduated as well! She got her degree in education and plans on being an elementary school teacher.

Now onto high school graduations ... there were three Westra grandkids getting their diploma.

Alicia came down to St. George and did a graduation photo shoot, and Wendy is always great about blogging all the Jensen Family activities, so you can see/read more about the graduation on the blog (Janelle Graduation, Seminary Graduation).

... in a slightly different shade of green, Camden graduated from Hillcrest High.
Camden’s graduation was in the morning on Wednesday, May 26. Chris and Kim and and Cassandra and Wayne all went to support him. He graduated with honors, also graduated from Seminary, and got a paid internship with the Canyons School District doing IT work with the Canyons District field tech during the summer.

Scott and Amy's youngest Taylee also finished up her high school experience ...
The Corner Canyon graduation was held outside, but in the evening, so it was a little cool!
There were fireworks afterward.

McKenna posted these cute pictures on her Instagram ...
The oldest daughter and the youngest daughter.
Little Taylee wearing McKenna's cap after her graduation ...
and then McKenna recreating the idea, donning Taylee's!

See more about Mckenna's Cap&Gown in 2011.

ConGRADulations to all the graduates!

Talkin' Bout My Generation

In Grandma Lucille's autobiography, she notes "In my lifetime many things have taken place. Phonograph, radio, stereo, TV, airplanes, electric and gas stoves, electric irons, inside plumbing, push button phones, gas and electric heating, coal furnaces, electric and gas water heaters, blenders, fry pans, mixmasters, and polyester materials." I loved that she included this!

For every generation there will be iconic items, innovations and events. Many inventions and memorable moments will be experienced by more than one generation, but many newsworthy matters will only be learned of after the fact once time has passed.

Have you heard the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel? It is a great recap of many of the top events from 1949-1989, so likely many things that Grandma/Mom (Margie) and Grandpa/Dad (LaMar) would remember ... and things that the grandkids will learn about in U.S. History class ;)

Harry Truman, Doris Day, Red China, Johnnie Ray
South Pacific, Walter Winchell, Joe DiMaggio
Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Studebaker, television
North Korea, South Korea, Marilyn Monroe
Rosenbergs, H-bomb, Sugar Ray, Panmunjom
Brando, "The King and I", and "The Catcher in the Rye"
Eisenhower, Vaccine, England's got a new queen
Marciano, Liberace, Santayana, goodbye
Joseph Stalin, Malenkov, Nasser and Prokofiev
Rockefeller, Campanella, Communist Bloc
Roy Cohn, Juan Peron, Toscanini, Dacron
Dien Bien Phu falls, "Rock Around the Clock"
Einstein, James Dean, Brooklyn's got a winning team
Davy Crockett, Peter Pan, Elvis Presley, Disneyland
Bardot, Budapest, Alabama, Krushchev
Princess Grace, Peyton Place, Trouble in the Suez
Little Rock, Pasternak, Mickey Mantle, Kerouac
Sputnik, Chou En-Lai, "Bridge on the River Kwai"
Lebanon, Charles de Gaulle, California baseball
Starkweather homicide, children of thalidomide
Buddy Holly, Ben Hur, space monkey, mafia
Hula hoops, Castro, Edsel is a no-go
U2, Syngman Rhee, Payola and Kennedy
Chubby Checker, Psycho, Belgians in the Congo
Hemingway, Eichmann, "Stranger in a Strange Land"
Dylan, Berlin, Bay of Pigs invasion
"Lawrence of Arabia", British Beatlemania
Ole Miss, John Glenn, Liston beats Patterson
Pope Paul, Malcolm X, British politician sex
JFK – blown away, what else do I have to say?
Birth control, Ho Chi Minh, Richard Nixon back again
Moonshot, Woodstock, Watergate, punk rock
Begin, Reagan, Palestine, terror on the airline
Ayatollah's in Iran, Russians in Afghanistan
"Wheel of Fortune", Sally Ride, heavy metal suicide
Foreign debts, homeless vets, AIDS, crack, Bernie Goetz
Hypodermics on the shore, China's under martial law
Rock and roller, cola wars, I can't take it anymore

Cooper had an assignment for school to showcase 10 things that he felt has impacted him and his generation. One of the options was to follow the rhythm of the song above, changing the words and to sing/record it for submission ...  he elected to go with the more simple slideshow option.

For ME (Jen) ... I remember the Tylenol Murders happening (1982) and it scared me so much. It changed packaging, everything now is sealed and safe. I remember the flooding in Utah in 1983, and even "helped" with sandbags (I'm sure I wasn't much help at 13 years old). The Challenger explosion impacted many in my age group, although I must admit I only have a vague recollection. I also feel like I should have more of a memory of the fall of the Berlin Wall ... although in my college dorm we didn't have a TV and it was my birthday (the day after) so I'm sure I had other things on my mind. I remember telling Grayson when the verdict in the OJ Simpson trial came in. I have a record of my very first email ... sent to Wendy on July 27, 1997. I had to dial up, using Juno. I recall tying up the phone line for hours downloading music from Napster. Music Evolution ... Records/Tapes/8-Track/Stereo Systems/CDs then digital. Also in 1997,  we were on vacation in Vegas when we heard Princess Diana had been killed. 2000/Y2K ... it was all anticipation. 9-11 of course. When Elizabeth Smart was found after being kidnapped. Columbia. Facebook. Google. Hurricane Katrina. Recession. Obama. Bin Laden. Sandy Hook. Boston Marathon. Proposition8. BLM. Trump. Covid.

Our first Apple Computer ... transitioning from Microsoft 8 (using shift keys) to Windows. Laptops. From film to digital cameras. Physical books to e-books and audio. VCR, to DVD, to TIVO to streaming. Our old yellow rotary phone ... to push button, then cordless, then brick cell phones and pre-digital cell phones. Ah iphones! Texting, Blogging, easy Amazon shopping.

Mom(Margie) added ... The world is changing soooo fast! It is just amazing. When LaMar graduated from the U. of U., there were NO degrees in computer. When he worked in computers later on, they were big mainframe computers that took up whole rooms. He'll have to write about it.  I remember roller skates that expanded in length to fit different size kids, and you adjusted them with a "skate key" that you hung around your neck on a ribbon so it wouldn't get lost.  A couple days ago (May 2021), I watched an interesting documentary on PBS on the development of medicine. It started with the accidental discovery of penicillin about the time LaMar was born. Then nothing happened with it for about 10 years, when another doctor researcher came across Fleming's research notes in a medical book/library. The life expectancy was only about age 42 back then. People died from infections that we easily cure now. Penicillin raised the life expectancy by a lot.  He started experimenting with it on mice and found it really worked and was amazing! It took his lab 7 months to produce enough to try it on a human. Again, amazing results! Then how they had to learn to make large amounts of it about the time I was born and how it helped the enlisted men in World War 2.  Then tells how they developed other antibiotics and how medicine has multiplied and developed since then. I remember growing up---no air-conditioning in the church buildings. They would have the stiff cardboard fans along with the song books in the holders for people to fan themselves to keep cool.

Think about it. What would make YOUR list?
If you had to come up with a TOP 10 ...

It was interesting to see how everyone responded ... which questions they chose to answer, how they phrased/formatted their responses, and one has to wonder what pictures they would have chosen if that had been part of the challenge (this was a gathering from Facebook/Dropbox, etc).  If these same questions were asked of the same individuals in five years, I wonder how the answers would change ...

A traditional time capsule is a container to hold specific items from the time, to be opened up at some date in the future ... check out this article for more on a family history time capsule - lots of fun ideas and good information!
