Great-Grand Baby Blessing & Gluten Free Muffins

Wendy is great about keeping records of events on their family blog - you can read her post HERE. It was Sunday, January 22 when the 6th Westra great-grandchild was blessed. Eli Dean Jensen. As Jase and Ellen live in Herriman, the Jensen's traveled from St. George and stayed with Shane and Alicia in Highland before the blessing. It was a snowy day for travel!

After the blessing at the church, there was a luncheon at Jase and Ellen's basement apartment after. Rick's mom brought some muffins (made gluten-free)  to Eli's baby blessing. As they were a hit, the recipe was shared via email afterward:

Prize Winning Muffins from Michigan State Fair
3 eggs
1 cup oil
2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups shredded zucchini
1 8¼ can drained crushed pineapple
3 cups flour (brown rice flour when making them gluten-free)
2 tsp soda
1 scant tsp salt
½ tsp baking power
¾ tsp nutmeg
1½ tsp cinnamon
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Beat eggs. Add oil, sugar, and vanilla. Continue beating until mixture is thick and foamy. Stir in pineapple and zucchini. Combine sifted flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baking powder and stir into the mixture. Gently add nuts and raisins. Pour into lined cupcake tins. Bake at 35 degrees for 15-20 minutes. If making into a loaf, bake for about one hour.

Christmas Eve 2022

(this will be backdated to December 24, 2022)
Christmas Eve, with soup and the slideshow and the candy bar game, is an annual tradition for the Westra family. This year, everyone traveled to Alpine to gather in Shane and Alicia's lovely new home. Built for entertaining, it was a great place to get together for food, family and fun.

There were several soups ...Jen's Chicken Noodle was not gluten-free, but all the others were! Kim's Ham and Bean soup, Danielle's Sweet Potato Sausage,  Janika's Cheesy Potato and Broccoli, Alicia's Creamy Chicken and Rice. There were gluten-free Brazilian Cheese Rolls, and gluten-full breadsticks, dinner rolls and orange rolls. The breadsticks and cheese rolls were baked on the premises (best fresh out of the oven) and Grandma's Kitchen (just a hallway away) came in handy, even with the double ovens in Shane and Alicia's kitchen. There were chips and dips and cheese roll, and SO many desserts!

There were several tables for eating. Plenty of space. Lots of food! Got some pictures in Santa hats and other festive accoutrements. Then it was time to review the past year ... the calendars were passed out, and the slideshow was up on the screen. This year's soundtrack was "Gonna Be Good" by Bloom and the Bliss, "Moments to Memories" by Adeline Hill, "Stars in the Sky" by Kid Cudi (Sonic Soundtrack) and "These Are The Best Days" by PinkZebra. Beyond the birthdays, holidays, school stuff, this was a big HOUSE year, with major moves and other renovations and remodels. See the calendar pages and a slideshow HERE

Then it was time for THE CANDY BAR GAME ...
The crew moved to the basement for a little more open an area.
Just to note, lots of things in the center were NOT candy bars.

... here's a little video of the action.

Until next year!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!

Red Robin ... on Repeat

Red Robin has been one of the classic Westra gathering grounds for years now. In October, Wendy and a couple of kids came up to see Jase and Ellen during the school's fall break. While they were here, there was visiting with cousins and the folks as well.  Mom/Margie mentioned a lunch or dinner outing with the Jensen crew, and invited Jen and any of the boys that could make it. Then Shane's family joined too. Red Robin was the destination, Friday, October 14, 2022 was the day. 5:15 was the time. Shane's family made it there first, and got the dirty dozen on the wait list. The Blackham bunch (Jen, Landon and Coop) were a little late as always (Blackham standard time) but got there just in time to switch around a few boxes (what Mom/Margie had for Jen, Jen had some pears/veggies and clothes for others to look through) before our group was called.

As we went to sit, Mom/Margie called for all the girls to come gossip at one end, and the men met at the other end. They brought out some fries to start everyone off (ones fried in different oil for the g/f crew). Strawberry lemonade was a favorite drink of many. Mom and Jen split some Fish&Chips (Jen ALWAYS gets that) and then there were the assortment of burgers and salads for the rest of the crew. Sweet potato fries were substituted for some, and an order of cheese sticks was devoured. Dad/Lamar got the check (thanks!)

The back room seems to be the place to be when we have a larger group.  Here are a few other Red Robin Westra memories ... although the picture proof is likely only a small number of the actual visits over the years.

2017 (see the blog post about this visit HERE)

..."just the girls" also from 2017

... another "Westra Women" in 2018

A smaller group gathering (not in the back room) in 2014 (October)...

Earlier in  2014 (July), but a slightly different crew - Baby Layla in both!

Red Robin ... food, and family memories!

Father's Day 2020

Father's Day 2020 ... this was the 14th annual group gathering in Scott and Amy's backyard. It's been held every year since 2006. Ironically (per the pandemic) this was probably the largest group there has been. There were even two dogs in attendance. The traditional family photo was first up on the docket (as Kellen had to leave for work) ... and there were going to be some water wars, so best to get it done before the kids got all wet.

Blackham's brought Grayson's super cool water balloon filler - a nice set up where eight balloons can be filled at a time, with on/off spouts to keep the H20 in some control. Chris brought a bunch of baby balloons (and Jen brought some big ones). So there was tossing, chasing, throwing and launching, as Chris brought his "launcher" to fling them high in the sky.

Cornhole is a favorite, with the Blackham Bunch especially. The girls liked the hula hoops, and of course there was plenty of food and dessert for all (and the dogs were begging everyone for scraps).

The Jensen's performed a rendition of "Oh My Father" with voice and bells ...
Perfect for Father's Day! Videos below!

... and some family fun in action!

... and let's not forget Scott's poetic invitation!

On Father’s Day, the place to be
Is at our home, Covid free
 We’ll gather and greet
And of course we will eat
 And games we will play
 To round out the day.
We’ll begin at 6 so it’s not too hot
And see how decrepit Scott has got
We will see how the Westra clan had grown
And allow for friendships to be sown
We hope to see you safe and sound
It will be fun to gather ‘round
And honor those who’ve done so much
And pledge to better keep in touch
And since you all are dying to ask
No we won’t require a mask.

Father's Day 2019

The Westra Way blog started in 2020 ... I don't know if Scott had any idea that his clever email invites from past years would be saved and showcased. Will this inspire him to write something even wittier this year, or will he become shy and standard. Does Scott even know there is a blog? *Ü*

He kept it fairly simple for 2019 ~

From Scott: Dear family, it is once again time to celebrate all of the fathers at the annual Draper Westra Father’s Day Spectacular! We have arranged for Emeril Lagasse and Guy Fieri to cater dinner and Cirque du Soleil to provide entertainment. Festivities will begin at 5:00 pm. We hope to see everyone there.
From Mom: I'm embarrassed to admit that I only know one of the three famous names:-[  We will be there! At least you won't have to do your yard prep this year!
From Wendy: The Jensens will be there!!! I haven’t heard of the two famous chefs either mom -- but I have heard that there is this guy named Grayson Blackham who also has the gift! Maybe we could enlist those services along with the rest of the foodies in the family!
From Shane: We really wish we could come to the Father's Day party, but my schedule has me in California that day so that my family can shower me with gifts and praise. Tell Emeril and Guy hello for me, it's been a while since I've hung out with them.
Derek had written that a few days before, Layla had suddenly turned very sad. He asked her what was wrong and she replied  "I just miss my cousin Jaiden so much and I really want to see her!" :) Happily, the Jensen's were able to make it this year, and Wendy and Jaiden and Jenna slept over at Derek's house so the cousins could hang out a little more before heading back the next day.

There were the usual outdoor games, and inside, Landon had set up a customized Jackbox game set. There were lots of funny questions about all the family members. Lots of funny answers about the Westra clan. What do you see when you look down from a hot air balloon?

24th of July Family Fun

In July 2018, Shane and Alicia were coming in to visit. Wendy's crew wanted to connect, and we managed to get most of the family together for a group gathering.

It all started with an email, and then more email exchanges ...

Alicia: I’m finally organizing our schedule for our trip! As always, there are lots of people to see and we’re trying to balance time with both sides of the family, a few close friends, and time to relax. We have two open evenings for family dinners...Sunday and Tuesday. Which one do you want (you get first pick...my family gets the other evening.) I should mention that by family dinner I mean going to Red Robin or something.
Mom: Shane & Alicia leave today and will get here about noon tomorrow. We are planning on dinner at Red Robin on Tuesday for any family that can join us. They don't usually take reservations, but I hope they will for a large group. Earlier would be easier to get that separate room, but hard for our working men. Let us now if you think you can come or definitely can't come, so we can give them an approximate number. Then we can come here after for dessert and a longer visit and so the cousins can play. Derek came at 8 this morning and will work all day to finish putting up the decorative panels on the garage wall. Thanks Derek! Grayson stopped by last night and went to Home Depot and purchased and brought home the Husky work bench we had chosen to get. He was able to get a floor model so no assembly required! So it is nice to have that taken care of! Thanks Grayson. He said he will probably stop by Mon. with some hooks, etc. to show us and ideas for us. Now we just need to finalize our cabinet choices. Jase and Janelle & her friend will be staying here tonight. Jase is picking them up in Logan, as their Stay-at-home EFY ends tonight. They stayed with Janika and Brandon this week. Then they will drive on to St. George tomorrow morning. We had a nice dinner and visit at Derek and Danielle's on Sunday and Rick and Jase were able to go there with us. They had never seen their house and Jase was a big hit with the girls, playing with them. Monday Rick & Jase went to the New Haven summer barbecue with us at the common area. Rick was able to buy a car. Jase finishes his training up here today for his new job at Deseret Federal Credit Union. Chris came last Tuesday to take Dad hiking, but Chris ended up feeling sick and awful and could hardly make it down the mountain, so he wasn't able to enjoy it. Corin's wife Kylie's birthday is today, so we can all wish her a happy birthday.
Scott: Tuesday is a state holiday so there shouldn’t be work conflicts. Amy and I will be out of town.
Derek: We should be able to join on Tuesday. We'll plan on it! Sounds fun! If we are going to Mom and Dad's house afterwards, we can bring some small fireworks (unless they are banned in your hood like they are in ours). :)
Mom: Fireworks are not banned in our area, so that would be great. Linthorsts did quite a show in the circle on the 4th, so I don't know if they will be doing more on the 24th or now.
Mom: Instead of going to Red Robin and trying to work around everyone's schedule, we will just buy a lot of Papa Murphy's pizza and have a family get-together here. You can come anytime in the afternoon or evening you want---swim if you want---have pizza when you want and have ice cream and cookies and brownies, visit, and play in the yard. You can visit with Shane and Alicia's family while they are here from California until Fri. And Wendy and her 3 girls are arriving later today until Fri.
Chris: We will bring some gluten-free boysenberries from our gluten-free boysenberry vines, and also gluten-free cinnamon French toast cookies. Sorry Wendy they will have almond flour.😇😅

... so, Wendy did NOT pay close enough attention to Chris's email and thought those Snickerdoodles looked good. They tasted good. But they didn't make her feel good! She had to go lay down (and take some Benedryl?)

There were Papa Murphy pizzas galore (although Jen forgot to grab the Cinna-wheel dessert she'd ordered with them, not set aside with the pizzas at pickup, but too much bother to take a trip back) and said brownies and ice cream... and fireworks.

Why are all the kids looking into the pond in the picture at top?
 There was a snake!

Jen brought out some duck eggs for Derek to take home, but he forgot them ...
and then Mom used them up.

... this video is pre-party, as the Blackham Boys got in the car to come out.
But it's a favorite memory of the day (and month, and year ... maybe life!)

The next day, the available Westra Women DID go out to lunch ...
but did Chuck-a-Rama instead of Red Robin

Family fun and ladies lunch ... reminiscent of a year earlier, July 2017

Summer 2017

There were some fun family times as Shane and Alicia's family came in from California, and Wendy brought some of the kids to see their cousins. After those two traveled so far, Blackhams even came all the way out from West Jordan!

First, there was a family party on Sunday, July 16. Grayson made pulled pork and it was tacos and sliders for dinner. Chris had been in the hospital for surgery on his colon/complications and barely got out (and felt well enough) to come. There don't seem to be any pictures from the party, but there's a little video of the crazy Blackham boys below.

On Tuesday, Wendy and Alicia went out to West Jordan to join Jen for Zumba.

Then the cousins met at the pool ...
Not all, but quite a few cousins!

Josh didn't want to go swimming,
but stayed and played with some classic Westra toys.

The "Days of 47" Float Preview Party was going on at the Expo Center in Sandy. It's a great way to see all the floats up close and in air-conditioned comfort. Three of the families went to that. Jen even got the older boys (Landon and Callahan) to come and join the fun.  Cooper really wasn't as miserable as he looks in every photo, he was just NOT in a picture-taking mood ... and now that fact is preserved forever!

A couple of the families and Grandpa went to hike Timpanogos ...

The Westra Women who were available had a lunch date ... Red Robin, YUM!

Wendy's kids had some s'mores in the Westra backyard,
while Alicia practiced her photography skills.

As promised ... pictures and video of the crazy Blackham Boys! The left photos are from the July Sunday gathering (the cave and the jumping over the flowerbed). The jumpROPE was actually a little later, a September birthday gathering with extended family ... but again, NO photos! Only some video of five little Blackham Boys jumping rope (I snagged a couple still shots from the video). I guess everyone was having too good of a time to take out their phones/cameras for pictures.

The Blackham Boys were a little JUMPY when going to the Westra's house this summer!

The Westra kids have memories of running down the side hill at Grandma and Grandpa Norman's house, swinging around the pole at the bottom of the stairs and daring each other to go down the laundry chute ... the Westra grandkids will have memories of Grandpa's cave, jump rope, the pond , the pool and more!

Here's a little bit from Mom ...
We had an enjoyable week with Shane's family here--they arrived Fri. afternoon, July 14. Wendy and her 3 youngest came straight from their annual "Father's Day Flee" which was at Bryce Canyon this year. The cousins had so much fun together and went swimming every day but Sunday. We played games and watched shows . We had a nice family dinner here last Sunday so everyone could see each other and visit.
Shane's family left Friday about 4 and were invited to a barbecue at a friend's home, then went on to Elko to sleep over and then arrived to their place in Calif. Sat. evening.

Wendy and kids headed to Ogden Fri. afternoon to stay over a night at Grandma Jensen's, meeting Rick and Janelle & her friend there. Then Rick and Wendy and Janelle & friend were heading up to BYU-I where Rick is an EFY Session Director and the girls are attending EFY.
Janika finished 2 weeks as EFY Counselor at the Y and headed up to Ogden Sat. morning to take the 3 youngest kids back to St. George where she and Jared will tend them for the week. Janika was so tired that Wendy had her stop at our place and nap for an hour before the long drive. Janika said being an EFY Counselor is so fun. She works two weeks on and then one week off. During her off week she works a 40-hour work week doing housekeeping at a Veteran's home for Seniors. Busy girl! She has done EFY 3 weeks at BYU, Wyoming, and Atlanta, Georgia so far.  A lady in our ward said she had 2 granddaughters attending EFY this past week at BYU-----I wonder if they might have been in Janika's group.
Shane is flying back here Wed. evening for business meetings at his old work place Work Front at Thanksgiving Point. He will sleep at our place 2 nights and use our truck. Then fly home Fri. for Alicia's birthday.
We are going to visit Chris tomorrow night.

Red Robin ... YUM

Shane and Adria were in town from California ... doing a little visiting, then flying out and taking the folks with them back for a California visit. But while they were here, we had a group get-together. We were able to get seated in the back room and had it almost all to ourselves. Landon had just returned from his mission in February, so it was the first time he'd been able to see many in the extended family. Keaton was so cute entertaining D&D's girls with snapchat filters ...

... and the classic picture of Dad in Mom's glasses! He had to see to pay the bill!

It's a New Year - 2017

This will be backdated to January 1, 2017
It was a late start to the Grandparents and Games New Years at the Blackham home. Gray had snagged tickets to the Jazz game, and he and the boys didn't get home until 9:00. Normally, that seems super late,  but on New Years, when the plan is to stay up until midnight, it isn't so bad.

Callahan and Keaton were off with friends, but the two little boys, the folks and Gray and Jen played some Speed Rummikub (several games ... because Grandma said we couldn't quit until she won a game, and that took a while), then a few rounds of Scattergories and then it was time for the countdown. There were a couple games of Progressive Rummy after midnight, but everyone called it quits before finishing (as the game, with seven hands can take a while). Colton and Cooper didn't seem to have any trouble staying awake this year.

Welcome 2016 - Grandparents and Games

Jen and Gray have hosted New Years for several years - back in 2010,  the whole Westra clan came out (Dancing in the New Year). This year it was just the folks. There was some Speed RummyKube and Tapple, a new game Blackhams got for Christmas. It's a bit like Scattergories, thinking of things to fit a topic that begin with a certain letter. It was fun (silly Grandma ... something green that starts with K ... "kangaroo"? Then the grownups moved onto Progressive Rummy, which was a little too slow-moving and complex for the little boys. We actually played all seven hands (usually we skip the 5th/6th ones), and although Gray won the final hand, Jen won the game!

The two littles fell asleep before midnight. As we giggled and gathered to take a picture around the sleeping boys, Cooper woke up (even though Grandma tried to get him to close his eyes again). We surrounded sleeping Colton and even put a little "Happy New Year" tiara on his head for the photo. Grandma couldn't stop giggling (she'd gotten a little silly during rummy too, with "three legs" and "multiple possibilities" and "it's just a little 2". I think it was past her bed time!)

Last year, Grandma/LaMar brought out a big box of "New Year" stuff. Hats, tiarias, horns, etc. Then he gifted the Blackham family with said box. Jen stored it for the year,  brought it out ...  and gave it back to him this year!

Westra Wills&Trusts, Finances&Fico Scores

August 10, 2015. It was a notarized Papa Murphy's pizza party. Mom had been learning all things Suze Orman, finances, trusts, wills, etc. and was encouraging all the kids to get their affairs in order, just in case (and they did the same for themselves). Chris and Derek were the first to finish up their paperwork (I guess Jensens were on top of things and had it done). Once Derek was done, he offered to help the other siblings along ... here's a compilation of a few of his emails:

Siblings, for those of you taking Mom and Dad up on their offer/incentive for completing the will and trust documentation and funding your trust with your title -- I have a contact for you to utilize to complete your quit claim deed. Laurie Waite at Advanced Title in SLC will prepare the Quit Claim Deed for you for free, and will charge you $15 to file it with the County (the same you'll pay at the County).  You just need to email and provide her: Your full names (husband and wife), The name of your trust you want the title transferred to, The property address, Your contact information (email and phone). She can then prepare your quit-claim-deed the same day and email it over to you to have notarized when you sign and notarize your other documents. It shouldn't take her long to prepare it.
Alicia had asked if we liked the notary that came to our house and if we'd recommend her. Yes, it was very easy - she lives up by us and she was probably only at our place for 10-15 minutes and I paid her $20 to notarize all of our docs. I asked her if she would do yours (S&A) and she said that she only does it close to her home, so you'd be more than welcome to do it over here. Also, I'm helping Jen and Gray with all of their stuff and they are at the point of needing the docs notarized as well, so it might be nice (if our schedules could miraculously align for one evening) to have you all over for pizza and just take care of all the notary signing at once. :)  Let me know what nights would work best for you couples and we can plan a night to take care of it. :) Also, Shane and Alicia - if you haven't done the Quit Claim Deed portion of this, let me know as I have a contact who can do it very simple and easy for you (I think at little or no cost).
I scheduled a Notary for tomorrow. :) Should we plan on 6:00? We'll get pizzas (and one Jen likes). :) Notary PAR-TAY 2015!! Your kids can come tomorrow as well - just let us know if they are coming or not so we know how many pizzas to get. :) Shane and Alicia - if you have your Trust done, you could get Laurie to do your QCD before tomorrow. :) Thanks!

So there you have it! A trust/will notary party with pizza. The Blackham boys enjoyed playing with their little cousins and Roxi the dog. The adults did the signing thing, the notary did her thing, and now the kids can rest a little easier knowing the end would be a bit more organized.

From Derek:  We had several families over to our house, to sign the papers and we hired a notary to come and notarize everyone's documents. The notary showed up, and I said, "hey everyone - she's here!" Grayson looked around at the boxes of pizza and the solo cups filled with Root Beer and said something like, "This feels like a bachelor frat party, and the "dancer" just showed up! "Hey everyone - she's here!" Only, the Dave Ramsey version of that scenario."

Here's a few more earlier emails  ... it started back in January 2015.
(Included for reference and to get a feel for the whole experience).

Mom (Jan2015) Yesterday we met Nelva and Arnold at Golden Corral. It was nice to visit with them. We hadn't seen them since around my birthday. We talked for 2 1/2 hours! I wanted to "pick their brains" about setting up a living trust for you kids. It has been weighing on my mind for years. Nelva said we need to add all 6 of you kids to our bank accounts as 2nd beneficiaries with rights of survivorship.  I don't usually do this, but during the PBS pledge breaks, after Suze Orman spoke on finances, I ordered her financial materials!

Mom (Feb2015) We received our Suze Orman packet of materials. I will send on to you access to her online material (she said we can share it) for you to get your own will, trust, etc. made up, so that your family is protected, which will bring you peace of mind and protect your assets.

Mom (March 2015) The financial mistakes we have made over the years, not knowing any better at the time, so you won't make the same mistakes:
  • We didn't ever put money in ROTH IRA's---we could have for about 4 years before Dad retired.
  • Me not learning about all this earlier, so we could make intelligent decisions together all along the way in our 52 years together.
  • Getting "Whole Life Insurance" policies. Suze and others say never waste money on them----it's a ripoff---just get term insurance. You get far more for your money. We just have 1 policy on Dad for about $40,000 and one for me for about $8,000, I think. We never got term insurance---except what his company offered free---two times his annual salary, I think.
  • Not getting a trust and wills earlier---thank goodness we haven't needed them, but you never know what might happen to you. Suze tells everyone to do a will and trust-----even single people in their 20's.
  • We borrowed once from our 401 (k). Suze says NEVER do that--------you are paying taxes twice on your money that you borrow.
We left the 9 Suze Orman DVD's with Chris and Kim yesterday for them to watch---from her talk shows--each DVD on different topics, such as retirement, etc. Then we can lend them to one of you-you can learn a lot of good stuff.

Mom (March 2015) I can see that we have been dangerously lax to have not done a will and trust before this time! I really want the peace of mind it will bring. Also, I would like the peace of mind it could bring to all of you to have yours done also. So, we have a deal to offer you: If you will get your wills and trusts set up within the next 6 months, we will pay for it, up to $2000 for each couple. If you choose to take advantage of this help, you can work through it on your own, with the Suze Orman CD (which I think all of you could handle if your estates are not too complicated)----in which case you could just have the $2000 for your emergency fund or whatever you choose. Or you could use the $2,000 to pay an attorney to help you do your wills and trust. I think that amount should cover it unless you chose a very expensive attorney. I think with all of us working on this at once, you can help us and each other to work through it and help with questions, etc.  I think we would all feel more peace and happiness in our lives to have it done. I didn't make this offer to Rick and Wendy because they already did it a few years ago. Janika's best friend Madison's dad is an attorney and was the stake president over the deaf branch and is a good friend of Rick's. So Brother Barney did it for them in trade for Madison's fee waiver being in Hands in Harmony Carolers.  So I will figure out another way to help Wendy and Rick.

Derek: This is incredibly generous Mom and Dad!  We'll for sure take you up on this. I'll take a look at the Suze Orman stuff right away. Last year, we looked into some attorneys to come and draft our will and estate trust, but we never actually did it. It seemed like the prices were just over $1,000 for just the will and estate stuff (for an attorney). We also looked a little at LegalZoom for the DIY method. We did get life-insurance all figured out for me with a nice policy for Danielle and the girls should anything happen to me.  Thank you again Mom and Dad for your financial example to all of us, and for your frugality over the years and your generosity. I think it's wonderful that you give so much to your grandkid's missionary, and EFY funds. And this is a great motivation to get things in place. We've been wanting to handle all this for a few years, but with so much going on, it's sometimes hard to find the time and spend the money. So thanks again.  We sure love you and appreciate all that you do for us and your grandkids. Speaking of trusts and estates -- I remember working at Zions Bank and dealing with the disbursements of estates, etc. with the surviving siblings when parents had passed. I remember being disappointed that these disbursements often got mean and contentious with kids fighting with one another over things. I remember thinking "I just can't see that every happening in our family." and I still can't. :)  Personally, I LOVE to see you and Dad spend your hard-earned money on yourselves (in the rare cases where you have - Lexus, etc.) and on positive, motivating things for your grandkids, etc. You've worked hard and you've been financially responsible and I think you deserve to spend money on yourselves. :)

Chris: Thanks so much, Mom and Dad. I created the account online for the Suze Orman site and it was easy - she does walk you through it well. I like the audio along with it also.  Looks like you can create a joint trust but a will is only for one person (no such thing as a joint-will). If you haven't gone through the online Suze Orman Will and Trust process yet, one thing you'll need is to have two alternate names of a person you list to determine if you are mentally competent (so be careful who you choose).  Your spouse is the first one to help determine that. You'll need the names of the people you choose, as printed on their Driver's License or other government-issued ID (usually their full name, but not always). We kind of had to stop while I checked that out - so I just wanted to let you know to have that beforehand. Also, if you've been in your house for a while, you can go to Zillow.com and get a rough estimate of how much your house is currently worth. They had some details of our house wrong, but their estimate is probably close enough. Anyway, for estimation purposes.

Mom: Our bank will notarize all of our documents free, except the will. It appears that most banks decline to notarize last wills. So we will probably have to go to another notary and pay maybe $10 to have our wills notarized. A question I haven't found an answer to yet is if the notary can and will provide the two adult witnesses. It would be a bother to bring your own witnesses. Witnesses can't be beneficiaries. For you kids, it seems maybe the main (and perhaps only) thing in your wills (one for each of you) is who you would want to raise your minor children (see link below for information). Talk to that person/couple and get their permission to put them. It appears that those of you who have children 18 or older, can put them, if they are willing. I imagine other arrangements could be made later if deemed best. Years ago, Merrill and Lorrie had asked if we would raise their 6 children, and we asked them. We all hoped nothing would happen--12 kids, yowee! Kind of fun for us all to work on it together and learn from each other---it is kind of overwhelming to tackle alone! Scott has already set up their wills and trust last week, except for getting them notarized and the trust funded by switching their house to the trust.

Grayson: We haven't been very involved in this discussion. It's not out of lack of interest in getting it done. We'll be sure to make progress on this in the coming weeks.  Both your insistence, encouragement to get this done, to say nothing of being willing to fund it, is very appreciated. To go through these matters together (even as I've glanced from the sidelines) has been very helpful.

Mom: When you print off your Trust (about 8 pages), also print off the "Certification of Trust" (2 pages) and have them notarized at the same time. The Certification of Trust is like a much shortened version of the Trust that you can use when opening bank accounts, etc. to prove that you have a Trust and which gives the date (some people like to keep their Trust private). So I guess it is good to take that along when doing business which involves your Trust. I read on a website this morning that it is good to let your Insurance Company know of your Trust. So we called Liberty Mutual and told them that we were putting our home and property into a Trust, but not our car. We have an Umbrella policy with them. The lady said people just usually send them the Certification of Trust (she didn't use those exact words, but that is what she meant). She said we could do it in person (they are close by, or by mail, or by email. So we are going to scan in the 2 pages and email them to Liberty Mutual as an attachment.

Chris (April 2015): For you who are working on the will and trust with the Suze Orman site Mom shared... I just wanted to share some of the things we learned in doing our trust and wills and such. Hope some of it helps you. The tips are not in any particular order.
  • You'll need to create two different usernames and passwords to complete the whole process. Start at the link below: With one login you can complete the trust (combined - for both of you) and the will and health care directive for one of you. Then start again from scratch and create another login for the other person (for will and health care directive for that person). You can use the SAME activation code they sent you for the first person (the first time you used this link  giftcode PBS) Hint - use a different browser for your spouse's login - that way you don't have to switch back and forth and logoff, etc. I used Firefox for the trust and for my will and health care directive, and Chrome for Kim's will and health care directive. That made it simpler.
  • The advanced health directive is easy! Do that first just to get momentum - it will help you psychologically.
  • The Trust Identification Number is also sometimes the Entity Number. You just pick the social security number for either spouse and that is the trust identification number.
  • Listen to the audio follow along with each step of the Suze Orman site - very helpful.
  • We went to the Title Company to have the title put in our name as Trustees of the Trust. They said on the phone it would be $50 but they only charged us $20 for the paperwork and for recording the title with the county. They said it wasn't really necessary to let a mortgage holder (Zions bank in our case) know of the change. Zions said that they probably would be notified of the "reconveyance". So we never did the Quit Claim deed as the title company changed it on the title.
  • Insurance - we did let our insurance company know about the creation of the trust. We just gave them the name and the entity number - that's all they requested.  Mom sent something about making sure the title insurance has specific language for including Trustees. If not, you may have to add an endorsement to cover this (or add that language). We tried to track this down but the title company we worked with was not the original title company so we still aren't sure about this.
  • Set a bookmark to https://www.suzeormanwillandtrust.com/account/login as you will go back to this site many times. Don't wait until you have "Lots of time" You can do five minutes and the site will save any info you have entered. When you go back, you do have to click through the screens you have previously done, but the info is all there. You don't have to enter it again. And, you can change anything at any time - so don't get stuck on one item of info because you aren't sure about it. It may become more clear later on, and you can change it if you need to.
  • Do the Certification of Trust as well as the trust - this will give you a shorter doc to provide to any entity that needs proof of your trust.
Call me if you have any questions I can help with. I'm so definitely not an expert, but I know more than I did a couple months ago. So grateful for the user-friendly Suze Orman site!

Mom (July 2015) Well, D & D officially earned their $2,000 this afternoon by getting their house put into their trust. I'm writing so you can benefit from their experience and Chris's experience. Chris got paid his $2,000 awhile ago. Both of them went to their title company, who handled it all for $20. We probably would have been better to have taken that route, in terms of time and money and how we did it. The house was probably the hardest of anything you had to do, and now I think that part will be easy for those who have yet to do it, by benefiting from our, Chris's and Derek's experience.
The 6 (really 6 1/2) month offer will be up the end of Sept. We offered the $2,000 with a deadline to make it happen.  It should be really easy for Scott and Shane to finish up now and Jen to get started :-) ,--- now that you have several experienced siblings to guide you through the process. D & D. had previously had their 2 wills, their trust, and their "authorization of trust" (mini-trust to take to banks, etc. to show you really do have a trust and the name and date of the trust. A notary came to their house and did those documents for just $10. And it would be easier to have "self-proving" wills that way, as you could just have a couple neighbors come over to witness the wills.

Mom (July 2015): I didn't know that I had a separate FICO score from Dad's since I don't work and we share our financial accounts. We had Dad's from our online Discover statement. We just found out mine when we opened an account at Granite Credit Union in May and the lady had to check mine also and told me what it was. Dad's was 821 and mine was 798 or something like that. Do you all know yours? I don't know how you can easily find out the wife's score, do you? I think Family Home Evening is a great time to also present "Life Lessons" to your children (to prepare them for adulthood and being on their own), such as FICO scores and how people actually get different interest rates when buying a car or something, depending on their credit score. Suze Orman says rates could vary from 4% up to 9% interest on loans, depending on your score.

Derek: Thanks Mom! Yes - please do send stuff over as you find it. I've joked with my work friends that even with my MBA and my interest in personal finance, my mother (who I never saw do anything with money my whole life) has turned into somewhat of a finance expert and has been coaching me on financial matters. :) I really do appreciate all the information you send over, and so appreciate the financial example that you and Dad have been throughout our lives. I remember Dad teaching me about needs vs. wants when I was in the 8th grade and that sticking with me. Makes me think of this funny sketch from Saturday Night Live.  It's good to keep up on your credit score and your FICO score. You can check it here.  I haven't checked in a couple years, but I have heard horror stories of people who check their score only to find that it's dropped like crazy due to identity theft that they wouldn't have discovered without checking.  We are big Dave Ramsey fans and thus try to live completely debt free (except the house). However, we have been thinking that we ought to get a credit card for emergency preparedness purposes (since unsecured debt is safer in those situations than secured debt). And there are benefits to using credit cards for your everyday purchases (points, credit history, etc.). Does anyone have a card that they really prefer? We were thinking of American Express through Costco, but I heard that it's not accepted everywhere and that Costco is switching to VISA.  Anyway - recommendations appreciated.

Scott: I think the Marriott black card offers the greatest value in terms of points and cost. It is issued by Chase. Everyone should get set up on Venmo to get the app.

Shane: Derek, our Stake Presidency showed that video in a fireside...I think that's the only time I'll see a Saturday Night Live video shown in a sacrament meeting room. As for credit cards, it really depends on what perks you care about. Because I travel a lot (typing this from San Fransisco), I use American Express for Delta Miles and Barclay's MasterCard with chip-and-pin to make European payments easier. But we also have Discover and the Marriott that Scott mentioned.  There are a ton of credit card review sites that provide good analysis of which cards are best.

Thanksgiving 2014

Scott doesn't write family emails often, but when he does, they are always enjoyable. The invitation to Thanksgiving November of 2014 was no exception:

Family:
We have invited mom and dad to our home for Thanksgiving dinner. You and any of your families are also welcome to come. We aren't sure of the time yet but probably in the afternoon. Pilgrim, Indian or football attire is optional but welcome.

We regret that due to liability and health reasons, the previously contemplated "Turkey Bowl" will not take place this year.. However, we will provide a (totally optional) leaf raking activity prior to dinner for those who want to burn off some calories prior to or after feasting. We promise to have football playing on one TV with Pocahontas and Pocahontas 2, alternating on the other.

We understand you have other [less fun and attractive] relations that you have to keep happy and will certainly understand if you cannot attend. However, please let us know either way by November 19th. You can still show up on Thanksgiving but those who have not met the RSVP deadline may be eating frozen pizza.

Thankfully yours,
Scott and Amy
Shane's reply kept up the fun...
Dear Scott - We appreciate the offer, and after much deliberation, we would like to RSVP in the affirmative; at least until a better offer comes along. As it would be rude to come empty-handed, we will gladly bring three whiny children. We will also contribute to the caloric intake by bringing some dessert, namely two or three pies in any of the following varieties: Apple, Pumpkin, Peach-Blueberry, Cow, and Chart. A gluten-free dessert will also be provided, in the form of leftover Halloween Smarties ®. Best regards, Shane and family.

Shane and Alicia and their three kids DID attend, so I guess no better offers came along ;) Chris and Kim and the three youngest Westra kids also attended, so it was a pretty full Westra group gathering, and there were even photos taken to preserve the memory. Yeah! Mom wrote in an email afterward:

We had a delightful time at Scott and Amy's. Dinner was delicious! We all enjoyed visiting with family. The cousins had lots of fun together. Chris and Kim brought lots of bottles of Martinelli's sparkling cider--a Taylor tradition. Some of us went for a walk after dinner to try to make room for pie! Shane & Alicia made 4 different kinds of pie, plus a gluten-free chocolate cake, and some gingersnaps. We were too stuffed to do them justice, but will enjoy some leftovers today! Amy and clan had made homemade rolls and homemade cranberry sauce, plus all the other yummy foods! We appreciate their hosting the event--it is always a big undertaking! Shane & Alicia and kids headed off to Midway for an overnighter. That is their new Thanksgiving tradition. This is their 3rd year.

Chris wrote ...

Kim and I took Corin, Camden, and Cayson to Scott and Amy's house in Draper and were joined by Mom and Dad and Shane and Alicia and their family. We had a great meal and then just sat and visited, and the cousins had fun playing outside and all around the house. I got to wrestle with Calder - that boy laughs more than any kid I know.

Easter 2014

 Got Eggs?

Easter at the Westras! Easter was April 20 this year. The family party was held the day before on Saturday. Looks like we were missing Scott's family and the Jensens... but still, gotta make sure there were enough eggs for everyone. They were hidden, then ... the HUNT!

... and then the haul!
... I think a couple of the boys enjoyed the foam stickers!

We got some funny bunny pictures ...

... and in bunny fashion, there was some jumping. Jumping rope! Grayson had a new phone/camera and caught some of these cool shots. We've had some Westra jump rope before (check out Cookies and Cousins  ... Ani has grown up a bit since then!)

That evening, as the Blackham's were winding down, they felt the house shake ... it was an earthquake. 3.2 in Tooele. Checking with the folks, they hadn't felt it.  Foreshadowing ... everyone would feel it in 2020!

Cookies and Cousins ... and Jumping

JUMP!

As we were growing up, we always had a lot of interaction with Uncle Merrill and his family. As we all got older, it was harder to have family gatherings with all the spouses, kids, etc., because it was such a big group. But today, Mom/Margie hosted a "Cookies and Cousins" party, and we had a great turnout. It was so fun to visit my cousins that I hadn't seen in a while. There were plenty of cookies, and while it was drizzling a bit outside for a good portion of the evening, that didn't deter the kids. Jen brought jump ropes, hula hoops and catch games, Dad/Lamar set up the golf shoes, and everyone stayed quite busy. There aren't  many photos/video, but we caught some action in a little video ...

At the end of the evening, a huge rainbow formed across the sky ...
