Twins? Mom's Cousins & a Howell Reunion

Photos from 1964. Converted from slides May 2020.
Getting slides converted to digital photos  ... came upon these photos. Chris joked that Scott had a twin sister we knew nothing about! Actually, that is baby Lorraine, born three days before Scott. These kids are Mom/Margie's COUSINS in Manti. Their dad, Margie's Uncle Ken was GrandmaNorman/Zada's youngest sibling (Kenneth Rodney Howell 25 January 1929 – 6 October 2009). They had one more child Blake who was close in age to Chris. Mom thought it was funny to have 1st cousins the same age as her own children!  Memories from Mom ...
  • Greg is the oldest boy. He died a number of years ago.
  • Deborah Kay (husband, Mike Mangum, died of a brain tumor a number of years ago). When she was young, she stuck her finger in a wall radiator with slats. She turned around quickly and it ripped her finger off. She learned to play the piano, minus one finger. After her husband died, she got a job working for the church downtown. When we were on our mission we would run into her once in a while in the cafeteria. She must have learned to type well without that finger.  She was about to have two knee replacements, a month apart, since she needed to get back to work. Derek, you can check the directory and see if she still works there or has retired.
  • Cynthia
  • Identical twins: Kathy and Kerri (they were flower girls at our wedding at about age 6). Kathy has M.S. and is in a wheelchair. Interesting that her identical twin doesn't have it.
  • Lorraine and Blake were the two youngest of the seven kids.

Ken and Yvonne were my favorite aunt and uncle and I would go stay with them for a week in the summer, when their first 3 kids were little. We would go hunting for night crawlers at night with a flashlight. But I wouldn't touch one now!! Ken and Yvonne got pregnant with a set of twins first, but lost that set of twins. Ken served as Bishop later on.

There was a family reunion (Howell Cousin Party) in Alpine at Barry and Jan Vencent's home on September 29, 2018. Merrill and Lorrie and Nelva & Arnold & Greg. Mom & Dad and Chris and  Kim and son Cayson (12) and Derek, wife Danielle, and their 3 little girls: Aniston (8), Layla (4), & Noelle (2) made it there. Mom mentioned that Derek met Deborah at the family reunion.

24th of July Family Fun

In July 2018, Shane and Alicia were coming in to visit. Wendy's crew wanted to connect, and we managed to get most of the family together for a group gathering.

It all started with an email, and then more email exchanges ...

Alicia: I’m finally organizing our schedule for our trip! As always, there are lots of people to see and we’re trying to balance time with both sides of the family, a few close friends, and time to relax. We have two open evenings for family dinners...Sunday and Tuesday. Which one do you want (you get first pick...my family gets the other evening.) I should mention that by family dinner I mean going to Red Robin or something.
Mom: Shane & Alicia leave today and will get here about noon tomorrow. We are planning on dinner at Red Robin on Tuesday for any family that can join us. They don't usually take reservations, but I hope they will for a large group. Earlier would be easier to get that separate room, but hard for our working men. Let us now if you think you can come or definitely can't come, so we can give them an approximate number. Then we can come here after for dessert and a longer visit and so the cousins can play. Derek came at 8 this morning and will work all day to finish putting up the decorative panels on the garage wall. Thanks Derek! Grayson stopped by last night and went to Home Depot and purchased and brought home the Husky work bench we had chosen to get. He was able to get a floor model so no assembly required! So it is nice to have that taken care of! Thanks Grayson. He said he will probably stop by Mon. with some hooks, etc. to show us and ideas for us. Now we just need to finalize our cabinet choices. Jase and Janelle & her friend will be staying here tonight. Jase is picking them up in Logan, as their Stay-at-home EFY ends tonight. They stayed with Janika and Brandon this week. Then they will drive on to St. George tomorrow morning. We had a nice dinner and visit at Derek and Danielle's on Sunday and Rick and Jase were able to go there with us. They had never seen their house and Jase was a big hit with the girls, playing with them. Monday Rick & Jase went to the New Haven summer barbecue with us at the common area. Rick was able to buy a car. Jase finishes his training up here today for his new job at Deseret Federal Credit Union. Chris came last Tuesday to take Dad hiking, but Chris ended up feeling sick and awful and could hardly make it down the mountain, so he wasn't able to enjoy it. Corin's wife Kylie's birthday is today, so we can all wish her a happy birthday.
Scott: Tuesday is a state holiday so there shouldn’t be work conflicts. Amy and I will be out of town.
Derek: We should be able to join on Tuesday. We'll plan on it! Sounds fun! If we are going to Mom and Dad's house afterwards, we can bring some small fireworks (unless they are banned in your hood like they are in ours). :)
Mom: Fireworks are not banned in our area, so that would be great. Linthorsts did quite a show in the circle on the 4th, so I don't know if they will be doing more on the 24th or now.
Mom: Instead of going to Red Robin and trying to work around everyone's schedule, we will just buy a lot of Papa Murphy's pizza and have a family get-together here. You can come anytime in the afternoon or evening you want---swim if you want---have pizza when you want and have ice cream and cookies and brownies, visit, and play in the yard. You can visit with Shane and Alicia's family while they are here from California until Fri. And Wendy and her 3 girls are arriving later today until Fri.
Chris: We will bring some gluten-free boysenberries from our gluten-free boysenberry vines, and also gluten-free cinnamon French toast cookies. Sorry Wendy they will have almond flour.😇😅

... so, Wendy did NOT pay close enough attention to Chris's email and thought those Snickerdoodles looked good. They tasted good. But they didn't make her feel good! She had to go lay down (and take some Benedryl?)

There were Papa Murphy pizzas galore (although Jen forgot to grab the Cinna-wheel dessert she'd ordered with them, not set aside with the pizzas at pickup, but too much bother to take a trip back) and said brownies and ice cream... and fireworks.

Why are all the kids looking into the pond in the picture at top?
 There was a snake!

Jen brought out some duck eggs for Derek to take home, but he forgot them ...
and then Mom used them up.

... this video is pre-party, as the Blackham Boys got in the car to come out.
But it's a favorite memory of the day (and month, and year ... maybe life!)

The next day, the available Westra Women DID go out to lunch ...
but did Chuck-a-Rama instead of Red Robin

Family fun and ladies lunch ... reminiscent of a year earlier, July 2017

Aniston's Baptism

Little girls in white dresses. Aniston had some pretty pictures procured prior to her baptism.
(Derek ... are you impressed with the alliteration?)

Derek sent out an email invite on July 2.
He had to send an update/correction to the address (2030 instead of 230) and noted "It's pretty close to our house. As you're coming up towards us you just keep going straight on Traverse Mountain Blvd until you come to the Elementary school. Turn right and head until you see the Stake Center. "  The folks are always great at coming out to events (and making sure to save several copies of the program, below), Chris&Kim gave their RSVP, saying Camden and Cayson would be coming as well. Wendy was sad to miss it, but it was Janika's reception in St. George that weekend.

More pictures from the day, and the gathering at the house afterward.

Father's day 2018

Time for the annual Father's Day funny photo ... and we get a "good" one too.

Missing Shane's family, away in California. Jase and the rest of the Jensen's made it up though. His homecoming had been Sunday, so the party got pushed a day. It was on a Monday this year. Colton was gone with his Wolves to a basketball tournament, and we were missing a few others too. Added Sol (Landon's fiance) and Courtney and Seth were there with their new baby (they left before the picture).

As with the 2015 blog post, Scott's amusing email is included:

Family:

You are all invited to a Father’s Day dinner on MONDAY, June 18th at 6:00 pm at the Westra residence. I will grill some chicken and hot dogs and have some baked beans. Please let me know if you are coming and what you can bring. I have arranged for some very nice weather. We still have a basketball hoop and tether ball pole but we had to remove the trampoline and fire pit. I know – Taylee is still mad at me. However, the tramp is right next door and I am sure you are welcome to use it there – their kids will likely be over at our house anyway.

Amy has nixed most of my suggested activities, including the garden weeding competition and car wash fund-raiser. Kemery has offered to give slack line lessons (you will probably have to sign a waiver – Derek or Grayson would have to sign two waivers). I am also willing to lead a hike to the suspension bridge or Ghost Falls. There are frequent Heffalump and Woozel sightings along both trails.

We hope you can come. Scott and Amy

So, no trampoline! But the slackline was up, and there was the new addition of swings. Grayson brought his latest toy ... a segway.  It got some use. Josh loved it, although should he really be riding with a newly broken hand? The kids took to the Segway easily. The adults ... Scott almost went down and there was a close call with the Segway almost taking out Noelle (Daddy Derek was right there for the rescue). Without the trampoline (hole) ... what happened to the TOADS?

The annual photo is featured up top ... here's a peek at what happens during set up!

Finally Finished - Family Portrait

In 2018, Derek shared a drawing on Facebook.
Here's what he said about it ...
"When I was 14 I started a family portrait for my Mom, but got frustrated (I hated it) and quit (Shane was the only one unfinished - sorry brother). A couple weeks ago my Mom asked if I would finish it, so 21 years later I finally drew Shane. I’m the cute little boy in the front with all that beautiful hair!"

Derek then got the sketch framed and took it over to Mom&Dad's house.

"I zipped over to my parents house on my lunch hour to hang the family portrait for them (that I did 21 years ago and just finished). My mom made me a bowl of fruit - which is nostalgic because she used to make me fruit bowls while I practiced piano growing up. I sat down with my fruit and played a little on that old piano just like I did so much as a teenager. Thanks Mom!"
Little memories like the bowls of prepared fruit, of jello cups overflowing with fruit, are just part of "Growing up Westra".
You can also see additional artwork on the walls ... those are sketches by Shane!

Gingersnaps!

I'm not sure where we originally picked up our gingersnap recipe. It's been the standard for all the siblings growing up Westra. They are nice and soft ... not rock hard like the packaged ones you buy in the stores. These gingersnaps always seem to be a hit whenever shared and people often ask for the recipe, which we are happy to share. They are so delicious, warm and soft, right out of the oven. Of course the kids love the cookie dough as well, and I like to freeze the cookies then dunk them in milk.

Here's the recipe:

1 1/2 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup molasses
2 eggs
4 cups flour
4 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp salt
Cream the shortening and sugar together. Add molasses and eggs and mix until blended. Combine the dry ingredients, then add them to the bowl and mix. Form dough into small balls and roll in cinnamon sugar. Bake at 350 for 8-12 minutes.

Of course ... it's best to DOUBLE the batch. Eat them as soon as possible, or freeze them. You can keep the dough in the fridge for about a week and pull it out for fresh out of the oven cookies over the next few days too.

If you need a little extra help ... here's a video!

...I'm sure there are many more rave reviews, but here's an email cousin Emily sent Mom.

Aunt Margie—
I meant to tell you on Sunday but your gingersnap recipe is one of my most requested recipes ever! Dave’s boss absolutely loves those cookies and has requested that I make 200 for a launch party tomorrow! That is one well loved cookies! It was great to see everyone on Sunday! Have a terrific day!

Love,
Emily

Added November 2020 ... Derek shared this picture in a family text. He wrote:

What is more "Westra"
(a) Making gingersnaps that do not, and will never "snap" or
(b) Using a cheese slicer as a spatula?

The little cheese slicer is the perfect size for gingersnaps, and the edge is nice and thin. It is just one of those things that you learned "Growing up Westra".

A funny gingersnap related story. This would have been back in 1991 or early 1992. I think it was Shane who had made gingersnaps. He rolled them into balls and stuck them in the oven and ... they didn't cook. They just stayed in ball form. Well, the obvious conclusion was that the oven was broken. Mom and Dad replaced the oven. The dough had been refrigerated, and so the cookies were put in the oven again. Guess what. It wasn't the oven! It must have been an error in the dough! But the old (working) oven inspired Jen&Gray to finish the basement in Gray's mom's house, putting in that mustard yellow oven. They even talked Mom and Dad into replacing their fridge to match the new stove, and Gray and Jen got a refrigerator for their little apartment as well! All because of some gingersnaps!

Any gingersnap snapshots or stories to share?

Musicbox and other Mom Memories

I am starting a new project. I will take a photo of certain items in our house that could be considered "heirlooms" or things to keep and pass on to your children.  I want them to go to people who will value them and save them and pass them on and not just DI them. Let me know if you are one that would treasure these things.

This attached photo is of a little music box that we bought in Germany or Switzerland when Shane was not quite 2 years old and Scott 16, I think. We also bought two beer steins, one for us and one for my parents (we now have both). I will send a photo of them. Other things from that trip or his first trip were 2 cute little dresses for Wendy and Jeni. A German comic book you kids took for "show and tell" at school, and a fun puzzle box with square blocks that created several different puzzles, using different sides of the blocks (all of these things have been lost or given away and I have no clue where they are---too bad. It would be nice to still have them.

The elephant tusk was purchased--I think on his first Germany trip. So I will take photos of the tusk and the 2 beer steins, which would also go with this little story, so you will know their history. I did write a journal of my time there, if I can ever come across it again.

Dad had been sent to Germany on two trips of 2-3 weeks duration for his job--installing his work product and teaching them to use it at the University of Freiberg/Freiburg? I think the 2nd trip was in the Spring of 1978. My parents came to stay at our house with our 5 children--the only time they ever tended all of our kids. 2 men from Dad's work were headed over there also and I flew to Zurich, Switzerland with them.  Then they took a train, while I flew from Zurich to Basel (which is actually in 3 different countries--France, Germany, and Switzerland).  Dad met me there and we took a train to Freiberg. There were two different Freibergs, one in East Germany/Communist and one in West Germany where we went.

While Dad was at work there each day, I would walk around the little village and shop and hope the people were honest when I handed them the money, not knowing what the money was worth. I remember one little sorbet shop where they were delighted to show off their English skills. Dad knew enough German to get us by at restaurants, etc. when he was with me--since German is similar to Dutch.

I remember walking by a little park where little toddlers and young children were playing and speaking their German. I automatically thought "wow, those smart little kids speaking German!:-)

I remember the little clothing shops, when they closed for the evening, would spread some garments on the floor, etc. for "window shoppers" to walk by and see. I had forgotten that until years ago I came across my journal of the trip. It taught me the value of writing things down and not trusting your memory. Now if I could just find it--plus my letters I used to type from our 9 years in Richland. They would be of such value. I remember finding one letter, years later, that I wrote when Pres. Kennedy was assassinated 2-3 weeks before Scottie was born.

I bought this little music box as a gift for my parents, and chose one that played the theme from Dr. Zivago "Somewhere my Love," which was one of my favorite songs. I see my mother wrote Z.N., her initials, on the bottom of it.
----
For some reason our flight home was a day later than planned. I was to be home to take Scott to the doctor to have his ingrown toenail surgery to fix all 4 corners of his two big toes. But since we were delayed, my dad took Scott for his appointment.
------
A little funny thing my mom told me: My mom baked homemade bread while I was gone. When she took the hot bread out of the oven, Scott told her that I always put butter on the top of the hot bread to taste better and to soften the crust and make it shiny. My mom told him that wasn't really necessary. Then she turned around and there was Scott, putting butter on top of the loaves!
-----------------------------------------
I started out just going to write a brief description of the music box------------and look what happened! Chris, maybe you could add all this to dropbox, under the year 1978, in the Histories Project. If not, I will try to have Dad do it (but it is hard to make that happen)---he is the one that I finally got to set up the Histories project. I've been after him for months to add the weekly letters you kids write (they will be of great value years from now as a history of your lives). But it is hard to get him to help me with all of my projects, so if you save them yourself and put them there, it would be great.:-) All of these projects count as your family history commandment and will bring you great promised blessings!

EMAIL ANSWERS ......................

From Jen: I think I remember the music box. I definitely have a memory of the theme from Dr. Zivago! I wonder if that is where it is from ... I absolutely remember my little dress from Germany! I loved it! It's in many pictures, including my school picture (3rd grade?). I also loved that cube puzzle, so much so that I found one similar to buy as an adult. We have it around somewhere (my newer purchase, not the original). I remember the elephant tusk sitting on top of the piano, so intricately carved. A little non-politically correct in today's world ...

From Wendy: Fun memories and cool music box! Mom, the Germany dresses are at our house-- you must have given them to me years ago. I don't think I have the aprons though, I am not sure what happened to those. I will check though. Janelle wore one of the dresses for Mother's Day Tea the year she was in Sound of Music. Here is a picture then and now! I also have the red sparkly dresses we wore for baton lessons and have pictures of my kids wearing them.I think I remember trying to get Grandma to give us Cheetos during that trip by saying how healthy there were (they have cheese in them!)

From Chris: I remember when you left to Germany, and returned, and the dresses and the Blue T shirt in the pic. But I don't remember any day to day happenings with Grandma and Grandpa during the week. I think Scott has an emotional attachment to the beer steins. If you ask Scott if he knows German... he does, but it's only "Das Beer" and "Der Wine".

From Scott: Nein, Nein on the stein.

We'll get to a Germany post at some point.
Until then, check out the pictures in Dropbox. Germany 1978.
