Christmas 1996

Christmas 1996 ... looks like another "Home Depot" Christmas tree (with the perfect shape) and a kid crew choo-choo train. No video clips to get a bit more background. One new baby this year ... Kellen was born a few months before the holiday.

Here's a few more photos from the holiday season ...

Derek and his friend Travis. A baby bundled up Kellen ... who is NOT happy taking some family photos in front of the tree. Pictures capture a couple other visits to the house, and a peek at the Hands in Harmony carolers that Rick put together.

Strong Clock Castles

This may be more of a "Jen" post ... but it would be interesting to hear other family members memories of Brother Strong and his clock castle creations.

Wayne D Strong was a member of the Cottonwood 13th ward. He lived just down the street from the church, on 6400 S. He taught primary for many years, and was one of my (Jen's) favorite teachers when I was young.  I remember I'd go sit with him during Sacrament meeting, and a few times each year, I'd visit him at his home. There ... I could see his clock castles.

This was a creative outlet for Brother Strong, and a labor of love for his children. He built them each a castle clock. They were so detailed and intricate. I loved looking at them. I think he built the two pictured above first, then moved into into some different styles. The one pictured below was my favorite. It has some similarities to Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty castle. I remember the gate actually went up and down to allow entry.

This may have been inspired by Disney's Aladdin castle, or the Taj Mahal ...

Another classic Disney-style castle. So many intricate pieces! I loved the blue glass "moat" that would light up. There were little lights throughout the castles.

The little drawbridge could be pulled up ...another moat around the castle.

I can't recall if I'd just invite myself over, or how often I imposed on Brother Strong to see his clocks over the years. He had a little (not so little really) playhouse in the back too, with tiny bunkbeds and a kitchen. I'm sure his grandchildren loved Grandpa's house!

I don't remember when the last time I went to see Brother Strong and his castle clocks. I was older (20 years old). I was dating Grayson and had brought up this childhood memory. It was so strong, I wanted to introduce Gray to Brother Strong, and the clocks. We arranged a time, and Scott and Amy (also dating at the time, so this probably would have been in 1991) joined us for a double date.

Brother Strong passed away in 1996. Mom and I attended the funeral. My journal entry from the day ...

July 1, 1996 Joined Mom in the morning to go to the funeral of an old Primary teacher of mine. Wayne Strong. He had been teaching primary for 30 years and taught all of the kids in our family. I remember going and sitting with him and drawing pictures in Sacrament meeting. He is also the man that made the fantastic clocks that would go see at his house even after I was out of Primary. In fact, I even took Grayson (and Scott and Amy came with us) to go see them. Gray was the only guy worthy to see this special man. The funeral was pretty upbeat, and the primary kids sang. Landon was a handful, not really bad, but a little too active for a funeral. I don't think Brother Strong would have minded though.

When I got to thinking about the clocks, I remembered that Brother Strong's grandson Danny was on FB and friends with Derek. I friended him, and he accepted, and then I reached out via messenger to ask (if it wasn't too much trouble) if I could get some of the pictures of the clocks. Danny obliged. I remember these exact pictures too. I think perhaps they were for an article in the Church News or some other publication. I still think of Brother Strong when I drive past his old house (on the way to the folks), and remember his wonderful life and his creative clock castles.

******************* Family Responses ******************

Chris: Beautiful, I remember brother strong, but not the castles.

Mom/Margie: I remember most of you had him in Primary and Jeni especially loved to sit with him in Sacrament Meeting--I guess because Jen and Bro. Strong both liked drawing and were artists. I remember in his class, when you would learn The Articles of Faith (I think it was) he would reward you with a giant Hershey candy bar. I remember his clocks were fantastic. I didn't remember them being castles, but thought maybe cuckoo clocks, but all unique. His wife Marty Strong was ill with esophageal cancer, as I remember, when I was R.S. President. I remember taking dinner over and him saying how she had trouble swallowing unless there was gravy or something to help it go down. When she died, his clock making gave him something to do to help cope with the loss.

DerekI love this! Brother Strong was my primary teacher too. He was really old by then. Dan was one of my good friends and we still talk. I remember when his Grandpa died.  It's interesting - I've never really seen these photos (or seen Wayne Strong younger) but I can see a TON of resemblance between my buddy Dan and his grandpa!

Wendy: I remember Brother Strong, and knew that he was a clockmaker, but these pictures don't look familiar. Those are absolutely amazing!! He was my primary teacher and would give us one of those giant chocolate bars when we memorized the books of the bible in order. I still remember them to this day! I remember the books of the Old Testament in order because I learned a song with it, which I still remember. I memorized the books of the New Testament in order without a song. I still remember them, but not as well. I checked Dropbox to see if I had any journal entries about him. This is the only one I could find right off, from when I was 14. I am sure I have other memories written down in earlier journals.
December 23, 1982: I tended Penny Eardley’s two little boys at Strong’s house. Brother Strong was there but couldn’t tend them because he had an operation on his hips. He is very nice and his last name fits him perfectly especially with the death of his wife a while back. We made a snow fort – Chris is going to sleep in it tonight.

Having a Ball (Derek, age 14)

Boys ... so often having a ball. Basketball, soccer, even little hackysacks. Going through some family video from 1995/1996, there were several times the camera featured young Derek (14 years old) showing off tricks while Dad/Lamar filmed. Here's a little compilation of those clips...

Also ... is this foreshadowing?

1996 ... basketball hoop, with tennis net along the wall in the garage.

2021... basketball hoop and pickleball net line on the wall in Derek's grown-up garage!

Easter 1996

I think 1996 is the start of the annual "Hunt in Grandma and Grandpa's backyard". At least I wasn't able to find any pictures further back. This was before digital ... so not as many photos, and not as many grandkids! Six grandkids at this time ... Conner (4), McKenna (3), Kadan (2), Alyssa (1), Landon had not yet turned one. It was also Janika's first Easter (see photos below). Kellen was coming ... arriving in October.

Easter was on April 7th, and the Westra gathering was on a Sunday. Trying to dig up memories.  I found my (Jen's) journal, mentioning a turkey dinner at Mom's house, but no mention of Easter. The fact that it was both conference weekend, and Daylight Savings (shifted the clocks on Sunday) was noted.

Interesting to see the difference in the #WestraBackyard ...
It changes and grows as much as the grandkids do!

Some video footage was uncovered ...
(see more of Derek's ball handling skills HERE)

... and introducing the EARS.
When Landon was born, Jen quit working outside the home, and stayed busy sewing up a storm. She made these baby bunny ears for little Landon (Grayson had to give them a try too).  These are just the first photos in the ears. Other fuzzy floppers would come in the future (lots of funny photos), but this hand-sewn set would wrap around many a grandkid head ... a compilation collage will need to be created. See if these ears can reach RED PIG status!

Wendy's family didn't appear in the four photos above - and Jen's Journal entry hadn't included much information. Upon request, Wendy looked up her memories (journal, photo album) from 1996.

April 7: Happy Easter!! Rick’s mom had Easter Baskets out for us with goodies. Conference was excellent! We left for my mom and dad’s during the second session while we listened to conference in the car on the way. We enjoyed a nice dinner at my mom’s with all of the kids. Chris's family came and it was nice to see them since we don’t get to see them too often. We all gathered around the TV to watch President Hinckley on 60 minutes.  Overall it went well! Besides President Hinckley they also interviewed the one who owns Marriot hotels and also Steve Young the football player.  We visited with the family and then the little ones went on a little Easter egg hunt out in my parent’s backyard.
Glad to have a little more info, and a couple more photos ... and to see the EARS in action already!

Christmas 1995

There were THREE new babies (stockings) added to the Westra clan this year (Alyssa, Landon and Janika). Missing Shane, his first Christmas gone on his mission.  The Jensen's alternate with Rick's side of the family, so they weren't there for Christmas Eve, but were able to join for Christmas Day at Merrill and Lorrie's house.

Here's some video from the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day gatherings ... Dad/Lamar mentions that the tree (notice it's perfect/more commercial shape) was NOT taken from the yard this year. The stockings were hung by the stairs. This was before the big entertainment center, with the older/big tube television. Interesting to note the changes over the years!

... and more miscellaneous Christmas pictures.

Merry Christmas Memories!

1995 ~ Annual Recap and Christmas Newsletter

The official Christmas Newsletter is included at the bottom of this post, and the information in it retyped (for easier reading) and added to a bit for the annual recap here on the blog!

1995 ... in the news was the Oklahoma City bombing in the U.S., a nerve gas attack in Tokyo subway. Michael Jordan came out of retirement to rejoin the NBA. OJ Simpson was found innocent in his wife's murder trial. The Dow Jones closed above 5000 for the first time. Windows 95 was released. It was the introduction of Ebay. A new optical disc storage media is announced (DVDs!). Popular movies were Toy Story, Batman Forever, Apollo 13, Braveheart. Best Picture goes to Forrest Gump.  Average income was $35,900. A gallon of gas cost $1.09. A US postage stamp was $.32. Bill Clinton was president.

Closer to home, it was the year for new grandbabies, going from three to six in 1995. There was a  missionary farewell, and a ferret. Here's a peek at the Westra Sibling stories:

  • Scott and Amy welcomed little Alyssa into their family, joining Mckenna who turned two (February birthdays for both girls). They ended the year moving from their first home into a nice home in Draper (Rosewood Park Lane).
  • Chris's crew has now been in Fayette for over a year. They have two boys, Conner and Kadan.
  • Wendy and Rick welcomed a baby girl, Janika, as the year came to a close.
  • Jen and Gray moved into a new home in West Jordan, got a dog (Samoyed named Loki) and had a baby boy (named Landon).
  • Shane went to the University of Utah, and put in his mission papers. He got his call and was off to Brazil (with a stop-off at the MTC to learn lessons and Portuguese).
  • Derek was going to Bonneville Jr. High, playing soccer (outdoor and indoor), roller blading and spending time with friends.
This was the first full year in the New Haven house (having moved in November of 1994). Mom and Dad did a lot of landscaping, trying to get Shane's help while he was still around.

As always, there are more family pictures in Dropbox.
Here's the original Christmas Newsletter ... dot-matrix printer?

Pre-Mission Photoshoot & Mission Call Memories

Here's Shane's mission call memories he wrote up in an email a few years ago ...

I received my call on my birthday in 1995. It hadn't been that long since I submitted my papers, so while I thought it would be cool to get my call on my birthday I was totally expecting it the following week. But I went to the mailbox just to check, and the big envelope was there! I couldn't believe it. Mom was the only one home, and I knew she would try to convince me to open it right away, so I shoved it under my shirt and came home and said "sorry, I guess we need to wait". I went up to my room (I was staying in the East bedroom at the time) and put it under my pillow and went about the day like normal. A while later Mom said "I was so hoping it would come today!" and I admitted it did come. She made me go get it right away and said I should open it right then, but I wanted to wait. She convinced me to at least call Dad from work and open it with him on the phone. I remember seeing Brazil -- somewhere I hadn't really seen myself going -- and "Belém" was a place I had never heard of, so I ran and got the globe and found out where that was. As we learned more about Belém and Brazil in general I became even more excited, while Mom became even more nervous. It was also cool to see President Hinckley's signature on it, as he has just barely been sustained as the prophet and president of the church.

Shane was he the fourth Westra missionary, but the first of the Westra siblings to leave the country for a mission. Shane had been going to school at the U, but was still living at home, so he hadn't had that "out of the house" experience the other Westra missionaries had. Mom was a little nervous about it all.  He was scheduled to leave for the MTC on July 19, leaving for Brazil in September. Mom and Dad tried to get in a lot of landscaping around the house while Shane was still around to help. Then the yard and house was used for a pre-mission photoshoot!

Mom remembers that they didn't check the mission papers for awhile, and then saw the passport stuff should have been started earlier. They panicked and worried it wouldn't come in time! They ended up going to a place in Trolley square to get the passport photo taken--nearest place they could find back then.

Pretty good pictures ... but too bad Alicia wasn't around to do a professional photoshoot ;)
(check out Landon's Pre-Mission Photoshoot for Alicia's photos)

Shane was the first Westra (of this generation) to leave the country for his mission -
but he wouldn't be the last!
